TMJ DISORDERS
What is TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a small joint located in front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. The temporomandibular joint allows the lower jaw (mandible) to move. Occasionally damage associated with the joint can occur disrupting the function of the jaw.
Many factors can precipitate TMJ disorders:
- Arthritis
- Teeth Grinding + Clenching
- Facial Trauma
- Injury to the Joint
What are the symptoms of TMJ problems?
There are a variety of symptoms associated with TMJ disorders. Some symptoms may include:
- Earaches
- Headaches
- Pain when opening or closing the mouth
- Inability to open the mouth to its full potential
- Clicking or popping sounds upon opening and closing of the mouth associated with pain
- Locking of the jaw either opened or closed
What is the treatment for TMJ disorders?
Treatment for TMJ disorders may involve splint therapy, bite plate, or night guard appliance. Medications for pain and muscle relaxation may be prescribed to assist in obtaining the desired results.
